Walktober

Week Three

Congratulations on completing the first 2 weeks of our UT System Walktober Challenge. Your challenge goal is to earn 20 leaves within the 31-day challenge. Remember, any combination of red, orange, or gold leaves counts toward your goal. If you’re just starting out, shoot for 20 red leaves; if you’re already active, aim for orange or gold. The idea is to develop a consistent walking routine you can stick to during Walktober and beyond.

Work together with your colleagues to win the Traveling Trophy for your institution! Your institution is your team, so get together with your coworkers and find ways to fit physical activity into your day. Take a walk at lunch, meet up at the gym, encourage each other to get moving —and keep track of what you do. See how your institution is doing on the Leaderboard section under the Connections tab of the Walktober web site.

We want to see your photos! While you are gathering to do your group or individual activity, take a selfie and share via social media using the hashtag #UTWalktober:

May 31 is World No Tobacco Day

Despite the widely known harmful effects, about 42 Million Americans still smoke and tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States.

During World No Tobacco Day on May 31, we encourage smokers and other tobacco users to take a 24-hour break from all forms of tobacco consumption. That means no smoking, no vaping, and no dipping.

Three Things to Know to Clear the Air

  • There is no risk-free level of secondhand smoke exposure; even brief exposure can be harmful to your health (with increasing risks for heart disease, lung cancer and stroke).
  • Cigarette waste is extremely toxic to our environment and adds to campus litter and pollution.
  • Cigarette-related incidents are one of the top five causes of campus fires nationwide.

Ready to Quit?

Tobacco cessation counseling and nicotine replacement therapy or non-nicotine medications are available with no out-of-pocket costs through your UT SELECT Medical plan as long as you use a network provider for services and have an authorized prescription when purchasing medications. For additional details on these benefits, please visit the UT System LivingWell web site.
